higi Kiosk Redesign

Client: higi
Role: Senior UI Designer

The higi kiosk is the primary experience for users engaging with higi. The kiosk, which allows users to check their blood pressure and weight (among other biometrics) is the key component for users to track their data and understand their health.

In 2018 the design team proposed a redesign of the kiosk experience in order to meet new needs from both users and the business. The reasons behind the redesign push were twofold. The first reason was to allow for the addition of higi's Health Connect initiative, which allows users to connect their data with a selection of healthcare partners. The other reason was to allow users to engage in smarter ways with the kiosk, allowing the user more flexibility to explore ways the kiosk can help better engage their health.

The redesign experience started with a design sprint to address the two use cases we were trying to solve for. The design sprint, while led by the design team, included an interdepartmental team across product, marketing, data, and development in order to address pain points from across the company.

Since the kiosk experience hadn't been redesigned since 2012, the design team faced the challenge of managing expectations from different parts of the business. The kiosk would have to maintain the functionality already available in the legacy KUI, but also would need to be flexible to adapt for future business needs.

The design team proposed a component structure for the dashboard that would allow for cards to adjust depending on the content available on that specific kiosk.

In order to allow for flexibility in the designs, the design team worked with the development team in order to institute a responsive grid system. This grid system would allow for the flexibility in the amount of cards that can be shown on the screen, but would also allow the cards to scale for the two different resolutions on the kiosk hardware.

The redesign of the kiosk was created in parallel to higi's brand alignment. This brand alignment involved creating creative rules around higi's voice, tone, and personality. With that in mind, the kiosk was designed with higi's main brand attribute of "fun" in mind. The use of bright colors and clean visuals are meant to be approachable to the user, putting a lighter spin on traditionally stark and clinical healthcare software.
